The Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Conference started in 2011, when a small group of officers from various clubs formed a committee to help students who were looking for information on careers and education in the health professions. The officers formed a group called Medical and Pre-Health Student Society (MAPSS) that would spearhead an effort to search and obtain resources for students interested in pursuing further education and career guidance in the field of healthcare. At the time of it’s creation CSUSB was one of two CSU campuses that didn’t have a department dedicated to advising students interested in careers in the healthcare field. Students had to rely on faculty to advise them about classes and career options. However the faculty were often overburdened and had a lack of specific career and academic knowledge regarding the health professions. It was due to this gap in student services that a group of four students started the first Pre-Medical and Pre-Health conference in Southern California that provided information on how to get into healthcare career programs.
